Update to ESNZ Jumping Rules in regard to Safety Cups from the 1st August 2025

ESNZ Jumping Rules as of the 1st of August 2025 states:

Article 210

1. A spread obstacle is an obstacle which is built in such a manner that it requires an effort both in spread and in height. For all competitions, 18mm safety cups must be used as support for the back poles of spread obstacles and in the case of a triple-bar to support the center and back poles of the obstacle. Safety cups must be used when poles are placed over a water jump (Article 211.10) and must also be used in the exercise area.

Required upgrade of NZPCA Jumping Equipment

Most Safety Cups (also known as breakaway cups) currently being used are 20mm and will need to be replaced or altered if being used for jumping competition run under ESNZ jumping or show hunter rules. Please note this applies to ESNZ Show Jumping and Show Hunter and not ESNZ Eventing.

Training at rallies and training days that are being used in preparing riders for Eventing can still use the 20mm safety cups.

NZPCA T&E did approach ESNZ Jumping to see if an annex could be added for lower pony club events and we received the following response:

Our Jumping Technical Committee discussed this yesterday and voted unanimously against this.

  1. The overriding consideration is based on health and safety. Often Pony Club equipment is heavy which increases the H&S risks. A move to slightly shallower jump cups on oxers will go some way towards reducing the risk of injury to riders and ponies, as the rails will fall more easily. Height is never a major factor in these risks – many of our most serious accidents occur under 1.0m.

  1. A set of 18mm breakaway jump cups is approx. $500, and given their purpose is addressing safety this is a good candidate for grant funds.

3. It is quite easy for 20ml jump cups to have 2ml ground off them to bring them back to 18ml. Many of our areas are doing this in particular for their ring 2 and 3 gear, and are investing in purchase of new cups for ring 1. Perhaps some of the Pony Club parents and supporters could bring a portable grinder to the club and have a working bee.

NZPCA T&E have researched supplies of 18mm cups and reached out to them, here are their responses.
