Running Events Whilst Using ESNZ Rules

New Zealand Pony Clubs Association (NZPCA) would like to clarify the current position regarding the use of ESNZ rules and dressage tests when running Pony Club events.

There is a valid Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between NZPCA and Equestrian Sports New Zealand (ESNZ). However, for events to qualify under this agreement and avoid additional ESNZ charges (such as centre line fees), the following conditions must be met:

To be covered under the MOU, your event must:

  • Be clearly advertised as a Pony Club event

  • Be run under NZPCA General Regulations

  • Be open primarily to NZPCA members

  • Allow non-members to compete only if they complete a NZPCA Casual Membership Form

If events are advertised or structured as open competitions—without reference to Pony Club regulations or membership requirements—they may be considered outside the scope of the MOU, and standard ESNZ levies may apply.

What Organisers Should Do:

  1. Clearly state in all advertising and entry materials that the event is an NZPCA Pony Club event.

  2. Operate under NZPCA General Regulations.

  3. Include a Casual Membership Form requirement for any non-member participants.

  4. Where possible, consider using Pony Club-specific tests for dressage.

We appreciate the time and commitment of all our volunteers and organisers. If you need help wording your schedule or understanding your obligations under the MOU, please contact the NZPCA Office for support.

Event Official List

We encourage you to use ESNZ officials where possible and if running a event that utilises Cross Country fences, Officials on the Current ESNZ lists must be used. This is a requirement under our Health and Safety Policies and for Insurance requirements. You can find a list of ESNZ Officials here (you will need an ESNZ login).
