Strategic Planning for Clubs and Regions

Strategic planning gives your Club or Region a clear and positive direction for the future. It helps committees agree on what matters most, turn ideas into achievable actions and make informed decisions about time, funding and resources.

By aligning local plans with NZPCA’s three strategic pillars, Rider and Coach Opportunities, Culture and Community, and Organisational Excellence, Clubs and Regions can respond to the needs of their own members while contributing to a strong and sustainable future for Pony Club across New Zealand.

A strategic plan does not need to be long or complicated. It should identify a small number of meaningful goals, the actions required to achieve them, who will lead each action, realistic timeframes and costs, and how success will be measured. This provides clarity for committees, supports consistent decision-making and helps ensure annual budgets reflect agreed priorities rather than simply repeating what has been done before.

Strategic planning also brings NZPCA’s values of Togetherness, Empathy, Self-Management, and Participating and Contributing into everyday Club and Region activities. When planning is collaborative, regularly reviewed and supported by clear policies and procedures, it strengthens shared ownership, supports succession and continuity, reduces misunderstandings and helps volunteers work together effectively.

The NZPCA Region and Club Strategic Plan Template provides a practical framework to help you develop your plan and connect your local goals with NZPCA’s wider strategic direction.

Clubs and Regions can also view the Strategic Planning presentation from the 2025 NZPCA Conference. It explains why planning matters and provides practical examples of aims, activities, budgets and measures of success under each strategic pillar.

Most importantly, keep your plan alive. Review it regularly, record progress, seek feedback and celebrate the achievements and milestones that demonstrate the difference your Club or Region is making.
