On Saturday 20th May 2000 a meeting was held at
the Timaru Golf Club to discuss the possibility of
setting up a South Island Pony Club Show Jumping
Championships in the year 2001.
The then President of the NZ Pony Club
Association - Mr Graham Barkman put forward the
proposal that the South Island Pony Club Show
Jumping Championships be established. This was
moved, seconded and carried with Ashburton Pony Club
offering to host the first Championship in 2001 mid
week prior to the usual Ashburton Area NZEF Show
Jumping event.
The first Championship took place on the 23rd & 24th
January 2001 at the Ashburton A&P Show Grounds for
branch teams of up to 6 riders (2 riders - 17 and under
21years, 2 riders - 14 and under 17 years & 2 riders -
under 14 years) where it continued for its first 3
years.
In 2004 Halswell Pony Club took over the hosting
responsibilities with the Championships being based
at Canterbury Park - the Canterbury A&P Grounds,
where it continued again in 2005.
The Championships moved to the country setting of
the Amuri Showground's for the 2006 event as
Hurunui Pony Club provided the responsibility to
host the event for one year.
In 2007 the Championship moved to North Canterbury
for the first time with the venue being the Northern A&P
Showground's in Rangiora where it was held again in
2008.
The championships moved to Taieri District in 2009
where they were held in the Otago/Southland Area for the
first time. Taieri hosted again in 2010 for the 10th
anniversary of the event.
2011 saw the Championship move north to be hosted by
Waimate for the first time with the venue being the Waimate A&P
Showground's.
