Medicine Chest (Pony Club Manual No.1)

Most treatment by pony owners consists of first aid. This is why it is important to have a few simple things ready to use at once. By the time the shops open it may be too late.

Keep the following in a closed box or small suitcase:

  1. Two small packets of cotton wool in polythene bags. (A big packet soon becomes dirty, once opened.)
  2. Two 10 cm elastic bandages.
  3. A bottle each of Equidine, Savion, Triocel or similar remedies, witch hazel or methylated spirits.
  4. A puff pack of antibiotic powder, from your vet.
  5. A small packet each of epsom salts and common salt.
  6. Zinc ointment.
  7. A veterinary thermometer (to be used only by an adult).
  8. Filta-bac or Coppertone Shade (for pink-nosed ponies).
  9. If you live a long way from veterinary assistance, include colic drinks and eye ointment, from your vet.
  10. There are other things that you might need so please talk to your Pony Club Coach and your local vet for more advice.
