2012 NZPCA Horse Trials Teams Championships held at Oamaru Racecourse 12-15 April 2012There was a new cross country track built at Oamaru Racecourse for the horse trials this year. In February a team of volunteer builders worked with Taupo cross country builder Robbie Mclean to construct the course in 21 working days. Two new tracks were built, a 95 cm track for the Training class and a 105 cm track for the A1 and DC classes. This year the new tracks proved challenging. In the Training class two riders were eliminated in the cross country phase, in the A1 class 5 riders were eliminated and in the DC class 12 riders were eliminated. This made it difficult for teams to post a final score in the A1/DC Teams competition and in fact only three teams could do this. In the Training class however there was strong competition among the areas.

NZPCA Horse Management Award winner:

The team travelled to Oamaru in a horse transporter and this long journey via ferry was a new experience for the team members and their horses. The NZPCA Horse Trials are in the South Island every four years and this requires a lot of planning and organisation even before the team is announced. The riders and their families were fortunate to receive funding towards this from Taranaki Area Pony Club and some of this comes via local ODE levies and other fundraising. A big Thank you to all Pony club riders and parents who helped support this team and especially the Taranaki Area committee and delegates. The event next year is at Hawke's Bay Equestrian Park in Hastings 18-20 April and should be great for riders and spectators alike.
